Peralta Quilt Project
| | Student made paper designs of the quilt.
Students dyed the fabric in class - it was an all day event starting in the morning when the dye went into the buckets and then slow stirring on and off for an hour or two. Around lunch time, soda ash fixative was added and then the dyes were poured out at the end of the day. The fabric was then washed in a washing machine.
Students did most of the sewing with help on a sewing machine.

| | This quilt was made last year by Pam Lucker's first grade class. It was part of a unit about the underground railroad. Students had read in books that quilts were used as signs to identify safe houses on the underground railroad. This star quilt was made as an example of a pattern that represented the North Star and might have been understood as a symbol for a safe house. Students dyed the fabric and printed their hands on the fabric. They sewed the quilt on a sewing machine.

| | Students creating the quilt (pictured on right)
The quilt in this picture was started last year. The basic idea for the pattern was given to me by a fifth grade student - Denia Larks. Students worked on a few different paper patterns to figure out the best color scheme and scale for the finished quilt. We dyed all the fabric and began to sew it but we did not finish it last year. It was about half way done at the end of the year and then in the fall of this school year we finished sewing it. | |
